EASTON, PA—Lafayette scored twice on breakaway goals in the middle portion of the second half, sending NJIT to a 2-0 defeat in non-conference women's soccer Friday night in Lafayette's Oaks Stadium.
The Leopards (4-3) snapped a scoreless tie in the 62nd minute, when freshman Catherine Calcagno broke free and scored her first college goal from 10 yards away, unassisted.
NJIT (1-5-1) managed a shot a minute later, as the attempt by Highlander freshman Camille Billing was saved by Lafayette goalkeeper Lauren Smedley.
There would not be another shot for either side until the 73rd minute, when Jill Dozier of Lafayette, on another breakaway, beat two NJIT defenders and then put the ball past Highlander goalkeeper Sadie Mele for a 2-0 lead that last until the final whistle. The goal for the sophomore Dozier was her team-leading fifth of this season.
Lafayette's Machenzie Moore got a shot that was stopped by Mele in the 76th minute and that was it for either team. Indeed, NJIT managed just the one shot by Billing in the more than 28 minutes after Lafayette first got on the board and the Leopards shot only twice in the same span.
The shot totals for the game were 10-4 for Lafayette, including a 9-3 advantage in shots on goal.
Lafayette's Smedley posted three saves in recording her third shutout and Mele of the Highlanders collected seven saves.
NJIT will visit Rider on Tuesday for a 4 pm non-conference game in Lawrenceville, NJ. The Highlanders defeated Rider, 2-0, when the Broncs came to Newark last September 13.
