FARMVILLE, VA – The NJIT men's tennis team finished with a 3-1 record at the 2010 Division I Independent Men's Tennis Tournament Friday evening in the team's season finale.
The Highlanders, who recorded two 4-1 victories in the tournament opener Thursday, continued their momentum Friday morning with a 4-0 win over Winston-Salem State. In the nightcap, NJIT suffered its first loss of the tournament against host Longwood, 4-1.
The Highlanders (18-7) recorded its only point of the match against host Longwood taking the doubles contests. Carl Lundquist and Diego Abreu were 8-4 winners over Billy Heird and Marc Ferrigno at first doubles while Stephen Erickson and Bryan Keelan were also 8-4 winners at third doubles defeating Adham Halabi and M. Barajas-Alexander.
Longwood (11-9) picked up four wins in the singles competition to down the Highlanders, 4-1. Lundquist , NJIT's closest singles match, fought out a three-set tilt at second singles falling 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 to Longwood's Ferrigno.
NJIT got the early one-point lead after doubles action, taking two matches from Winston-Salem State. The number two doubles team of Stephen Erickson and Bryan Keelan were 8-2 winners over Troy Moore and Mason King. At third doubles, Fraser Croad and Dan Salomon picked up an 8-1 victory over Joab Odera and Calvin Brooks.
In singles action, the Highlanders won each match in straight sets to clinch the victory. Senior captain Cosmin Chiujdea was a 6-1, 6-1 winner of Ian Hunter at second singles while Salomon posted his second win of the day with a dominating performance over Antentor Hinton, 6-0, 6-0. Keelan capped off the match with a 6-1, 6-0 victory at the sixth spot over Mason King for the Highlanders third win of the tournament.

NJIT – 3-1, Seattle – 2-2, N.C. Central – 1-3 and Winston-Salem State – 0-4.

Jose Fabara, N.C. Central, Yusuke Kanehira, Seattle and Brian Coxton, Winston-Salem State.
Nobu Tanaka from Longwood was named Tournament MVP.
The 18 wins were the most in a season for the Highlanders since they began playing a Division I schedule in 2006. The previous two years NJIT tallied 11 wins.
Three seniors close out their career at NJIT – Stephen Erickson, Cosmin Chiujdea and Dimitri Athans.
