Seton Hall Blanks Highlanders

Teddy Bickert finished 3-for-4 vs. Seton Hall Sunday

SOUTH ORANGE, NJ – Seton Hall blanked NJIT, 7-0, Sunday afternoon at Owen T. Carroll Field in the final day of the Strike Out Cancer Tournament.

 

Seton Hall right-hander Benny Mejia (1-0) posted the win after a 2hr and 40 minute rain delay, which occurred in the top of the third inning.  Mejia pitched five scoreless innings fanning five batters.  Four different Pirates completed the next four innings allowing six NJIT hits to close out the win.

 

The starting and losing pitcher for NJIT was left-handed pitcher Tripp Davis (1-2).  Davis pitched the first two innings and did not return after the rain delay, allowing three hits and three runs. Left-handed pitcher Bobby Wyrwa pitched five innings scattering seven hits and three runs.

 

Seton Hall freshman 3B Giuseppe Papaccio and 1B Michael Betz both went 2-for-3 with one run batted in while LF Bobby Abreu finished 1-for-4 with two RBI.

 

NJIT (2-7) was led by freshman Teddy Bickert, who was 3-for-4, with three singles.  Sophomore 2B Vincent Del Vecchio was 2-for-4, including a sixth-inning double.  Four different Highlanders went 1-for-4 on the day.

 

Seton Hall scored three times in the bottom of the second.  Papaccio led off the inning with a triple and came around to score on a single by Betz.  Abreu doubled to right field driving in two runs for a 3-0 advantage.

 

The Pirates tallied four runs in the final four innings.  Papaccio hit a sacrifice fly to right field in the fifth inning.  SS AJ Rusbarsky hit a solo home run in the sixth for the Pirates and C Nick Ammirati had an RBI double in the seventh. 

 

The Highlanders will fly to Florida on Monday, as they begin their annual Spring Break trip in the 2010 Russ Matt Central Florida Invitational in Winter Haven, FL.

 

NJIT will open play with an 11am game Tuesday against UMBC. The Highlanders are slated to play Bradley on Wednesday, North Dakota State on Friday and Long Island on Saturday.
