SOUTH ORANGE, NJ – Seton Hall scored eight runs in the bottom of the first inning cruising to a 15-2 baseball win over NJIT in a rain-shortened seven inning game at Owen T. Carroll Field in the Strike Out Cancer Tournament.
Pirates CF Michael Rodgers tripled to lead the game off in the bottom of the first inning and came around to score on a double by SS RJ Rusbarsky for the first run of the game. Seton Hall's LF Bobby Migliazza doubled to right center and C Frank Esposito followed with a singled to left field before the Highlanders recorded the first out of the inning. 2B Chris Fontenelli drove in two runs with a double to right center and Rusbarsky batting for the second time in the inning tacked on three more runs with a double to left field, for an 8-0 lead.
Rusbarsky went 4-for-5 with two runs scored and five runs batted in to lead Seton Hall, who improved to 3-7 on the season. Rodgers and Esposito each added two hits apiece for the Pirates, who finished with 13 hits as a team.
Pirates Joe Dirocco (2-1) started and got the win working the first five innings and scattered four hits with eight strikeouts and three walks.
RHP Mark Leiter, the first of three pitchers for NJIT, took the loss and is 1-2 on the season.
Freshman Jesus Jaile relieved catcher Bryan Bleakley in the top of the second and batted third in the NJIT lineup recording two hits, including a third-inning double that drove home the first NJIT run.
Highlanders' Teddy Bickert scored the teams second run after leading off the fourth inning with a triple and scored on a wild pitch.
Jeff Peterson, John Berner and Anthony Caiola tallied one hit apiece for NJIT.
The Highlanders will return to action on Saturday and face Lafayette. The game which was originally scheduled for 10:00am, will start at Noon.
