PHILADELPHIA - Drexel women's soccer won for the third time in four tries in the young season, defeating visiting NJIT, 3-0, Sunday afternoon with a goal in the first half and two more in the second half.
Caley Burke, Jenna Lindsay and Carly Snyder each scored goals for Drexel, which posted its third shutout of the season.
Drexel got the only goal of the first half in the 18th minute. Snyder took a corner kick for the Dragons and set up Burke, who headed the ball off of NJIT goalkeeper Sadie Mele and into the net.
Drexel outsthot the Highlanders, 13-0, in the first 45 minutes, but Mele made four saves in the half, including a pair from right in front of the net to help keep her team in the game.
In the second half, Lindsay broke in alone on the right side after receiving a perfect feed from Daria Bialik. She finished the player for her fourth goal of the season at 52:21. A freshman, Lindsay has one goal in each of her first four games and is the first Dragon freshman ever to achieve that feat.
Less than eight minutes later, Snyder picked up a deflection near the top of the box, dribbled past a defender and scored in the 61st minute, unassisted, for the final score of 3-0.
The only shot on goal for the Highlanders came from sophomore Kori Washington off of a corner kick feed from Erika Taugher early in the second half with NJIT trailing, 1-0.
Kaitlin Bond and Nicole Sinclair shared the shutout for Drexel, as Bond started and went 59 minutes in goal, making one save, while Sinclair came in for Bond for the first time this season and played the final 31 minutes.
NJIT's Mele made seven saves in the game.
The Highlanders will return to action on Wednesday, when they host Wagner in a 7 pm match on Lubetkin Field.
