BRONX, NY – NJIT's Christian Baumbach and Umar Saeed, led the field at the NJIT Classic from start to finish on Van Cordtlandt Park course Sunday.
Freshman Christian Baumbach, who was recognized last week as the Great West Co-Male Runner of the Week, and captain Umar Saeed, an all-East performer in 2005 and 2006 were the course leaders in the Highlanders 4-0 sweep of the meet which was scored as a series of dual meets. NJIT notched wins over Fairleigh Dickinson, 17-46; Long Island, 18-41; St. Francis (NY), 19-40; and Saint Peter's, 19-41.
Baumbach, from Hopewell, NJ and Saeed, from Parlin, NJ, covered the 8k course with a time of 26:31, crossing the finish line simultaneously with their hands raised high in the air as they celebrated. (see picture)
Freshman Dan Sapienza was the third Highlander to cross the finish line at 27:57. Other Highlanders represented in the race were – Joe Ju 28:49, Stefan Montalvo, who set a new personal-best at 29:03, Patrick Granitzki 29:09, Brad Leonhardt 31:21, Chadwick Munroe 31:51 John Zawisa 33:46 and Mark Givens 39:12.
Next up for the Highlanders is the Fairfield Invitational on September 27. The meet is scheduled to start at 10:00am.
