EMMITSBURG, MD—Visiting NJIT got on the board first and later tied the match at two, but Mount St. Mary's scored three unanswered goals in the final 30:09 for a 5-2 women's soccer win Wednesday afternoon at Waldron Family Stadium.
NJIT's first goal was an own goal, knocked into its own net by the Mount, but the Highlanders second goal was a historic one for the program and its scorer. With NJIT trailing, 2-1, senior Erika Taugher connected at 48:20 for her first goal of the season and the school record-setting 14th goal of her career.
Taugher, who already held the school record for career assists and career points, had been tied with Cathy Wasko and Erin Salgado for most career goals (13) for the program that began play in 1996 and is in its 13th year of existence and third year in Division I.
The victorious Mountaineers got two goals from freshman Sadie Winship and one each from Meghamn Brennan, Kim Karpinski and Emily Menotti. Karpinski also had two assists, while Menotti, Ieva Kibirkstis, Colleen Regan and Nicole Berge all collected an assist apiece.
Kim Miller made eight saves to earn the win in goal for the Mount, while NJIT's Sadie Mele made seven saves.
Mount St. Mary's had a 23-13 edge in overall shots, but the shots on goal were closer, favoring the home team, 12-10. The Highlanders had seven corner kicks to four for the Mount.
The Highlanders went ahead on the own goal in the ninth minute, but the Mountaineers tied it on Brennan's goal in the 17th minute and then went ahead on the first of Winship's two goals at 30:47 for a 2-1 lead that stood at halftime.
NJIT drew back even in the fourth minute of the second half, taking advantage of a mistake by Miller, the Mount goalkeeper. Emma Vinski of the Highlanders got the ball and fed Taugher, who scored into the empty net. The assist was Vinski's second of the season.
Karpinski, a junior, then took part in the next three goals for the Mountaineers, scoring the go-ahead goal unassisted at 59:51 and then assisting on goals by Menotti in the 73rd minute and the second goal for Winship in the 85th minute.
The Highlanders, who began a string of six consecutive away games with the trip to Mount St. Mary's, will head to Philadelphia and La Salle for a 7 pm game Friday night.
