Wright State's SS Justin Parker broke a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the fifth inning with a two-out single to right center as the Raiders tacked on three more runs in the inning defeating the Highlanders in game one of the three-game series, 9-3, at Nischwitz Stadium Friday night.
After the two-out single by Parker in the fifth, junior Jeff Mercer doubled down the left field line driving in the second run for the Raiders. Ross Vagedes followed with an RBI single through the left side and later stole second moving into scoring position. Gerald Ogrinc recorded the fourth single of the inning for Wright State driving in the final run taking a 5-1 lead.
NJIT struck first in the top of the third inning when SS Miguel Lugo doubled down the left field line scoring Tyler Hamilton. Hamilton scored the first run of the game as he reached base on a double of his own .
The Highlanders added a run in the top of the seventh on a homerun by Rob Pietrocola, his first of the season. Lugo scored the final run of the game for NJIT on a wild pitch in the top of the eighth.
The Highlanders combined for seven hits in the game led Pietrocola hitting 2-for-4 with one run batted in and one run scored. Five different Highlanders recorded a hit in the game - Lugo, Matt Schlitter, Dom Hayes, Matt Tomczyk and Hamilton.
Wright State's Parker drove in three runs finishing the day 2-for-4 while Ogrinc hit 2-for-3 with two runs batted in.
Raiders winning pitcher Alex Kaminsky (8-1) pitched six innings, giving up four hits while fanning a game-high five batters.
NJIT's LHP Cory Kuzmik got credited with the loss pitching five innings, letting up five runs and striking out four. NJIT's fourth pitcher of the night Chris Parenti came into face the final four batters of the game giving up one hit and fanning one.
Saturday's game is set for 6:30pm at Nischwitz Stadium.
