NJIT Track and Field Closes Out Second Day With Two Medals at the America East Indoor Championships

BOSTON, Mass. - The NJIT track and field teams finished their competition at the America East Indoor Championships on Sunday at the Boston University Track and Tennis Center. The Highlanders recorded 12 personal-bests and 18 top-five marks in program history.
 
The men finished in eighth place with 22 points while the women finished ninth with 32 points.
 
Joseph Mucci earned the America East Elite 18 award for the third time in his career, which honors the highest achievement in academics and athletics by a student-athlete in each sport. He boasts a 4.0 GPA with a double major in mathematical sciences and computer science.
 
Zaidah Lightener earned a silver medal in the triple jump with a college-best 11.86m. Raegan Bossard scored points in the triple jump with a mark of 11.55m to finish seventh.
 
Nadia Zhecheva, Jenna Keith, Hayley Lucido, and Julia Canonaco earned a bronze medal in the 4x800m relay with a time of 9:15.16, which is the second-best in program history.

In the men's 4x800m relay, the team of Mucci, James Estafanous, Fabian Herrera, and Noah Chatman finished fifth with a time of 7:44.38, which is a new school record.

Pietro Carpentari broke the school record with a 500m time of 1:03.96 to finish fourth for the event. For the women's 500m, Lucia Julvez secured the fifth place at a time of 1:15.82 while Sanai Jenkins delivered a time of 1:16.10, coming in at the sixth spot.

Mucci broke the school record in the 1,000m with a time of 2:27.69 to finish in sixth place.

For the men's 4x400m relay, Carpentari, Lossenie Fofana, Robbie Tormo, and Gabriel Truehart captured seventh place with a time of 3:17.17.

The women's 4x400m relay team that includes Julvez, Jenkins, Nelagh Matthews, and Kierstin Ashby, ran a time of 3:50.40 to finish fourth.

Lucido ran a time of 2:15.44 in the 800m to finish in fifth place for the event.

Jeusten Jourdain earned the eighth spot with a time of 8.92 in the 60m hurdles.

For the men's triple jump, Ryan Nartey (14.47m) stamped the fifth spot and Marvellous Bassey (14.18m) secured the seventh spot with personal-best marks.

NJIT will travel back to Boston in two weeks for the IC4A/ECAC Indoor Championships on March 7-9.
