NJIT suffered a 1-0 loss against Rutgers in a defensive battle to open the season. The Highlanders held the Scarlet Knights scoreless until the 85th minute despite facing 27 shots. Mojisola Ayodele led the defensive effort with four saves, and the Highlanders blocked ten shots, including nine in the second half.

NJIT attempted eight shots, with four on target in the season opener. Merle Hueser, Mikayla Balio, and Emily Jozak each took two shots.

Six Highlanders played all 90 minutes, and five players made their NJIT debut against Rutgers.

The Highlanders are led by rising junior Briana Andreoli, who was selected to the 2024 America East Conference Women's Soccer Preseason All-Conference team. Andreoli, an America East first-team selection last season, played in all 19 matches (one of nine players to do so) while making five starts. She led the team with six goals while adding three assists for a team-high 15 points.  Entering the 2023 America East tournament, her goal and point totals were tied for third in the conference.

Sophomore Merle Hueser was named to the America East All-Rookie Team in 2023, starting 18 out of 19 matches on the backline in her first year. The Rheinstetten, Germany native was one of nine players and the only freshman to appear in all 19 contests for the Highlanders. She finished second on the team in total minutes played (1,600) after going the full 90 minutes in fourteen matches.

SCOUTING MARIST
Marist is seeking its first win of the season after falling 2-1 to Seton Hall in its opener. Maille McDermott scored the first goal of her collegiate career off a corner kick from Gabby Tirado against the Pirates. Goalkeeper Maddy Catalanotti made five saves in the match.

The Red Foxes are coming off a 2-9-5 season in 2023, winning both matches in MAAC play. NJIT aims to even the all-time series against Marist, currently leading 2-1. However, the Highlanders won the last matchup 2-0 on August 30, 2017.
