NJIT NEWS & NOTES
Head coach Ally Nick enters her ninth season leading the Highlanders program. Over her first eight seasons, Nick compiled an overall record (W-L-D) of 54-61-22 (22-32-7 conference - ASUN and America East). In four seasons as a member of the America East Conference (since 2020), her record stands at 21-31-14 with a 10-16-5 mark in conference play.
In 2023, the Highlanders posted a 7-7-5 overall record and a 3-4-1 record in America East play. They were eliminated in the quarterfinals of the America East Tournament by UMass Lowell, 3-1. Under Nick's guidance, NJIT achieved its first .500 or better record since 2018 and reached the league playoffs as the No. 5 seed. This marked the program's second-best finish in four years as an America East member (5th; finished 3rd in 2021).
NJIT aims to qualify for its fourth consecutive America East Tournament this year. The Highlanders have not participated in four straight conference tournaments since 2009-12, when they competed in the Great West Conference. Under Coach Nick, NJIT made five conference tournament appearances. The Highlanders ranked No. 6 in AE Preseason Poll, the minimum required for a postseason berth.
The Highlanders are led by rising junior Briana Andreoli, who was selected to the 2024 America East Conference Women's Soccer Preseason All-Conference team. Andreoli, an America East first-team selection last season, played in all 19 matches (one of nine players to do so) while making five starts. She led the team with six goals while adding first three assists for a team-high 15 points. Entering the 2023 America East tournament, her goal and point totals were tied for third in the conference.
Sophomore Merle Hueser was named to the America East All-Rookie Team in 2023, starting 18 out of 19 matches on the backline in her first year. The Rheinstetten, Germany native was one of nine players and the only freshman to appear in all 19 contests for the Highlanders. She finished second on the team in total minutes played (1,600) after going the full 90 minutes in fourteen matches.
SCOUTING RUTGERS
This is the first all-time meeting between NJIT and Rutgers. Rutgers is also making its 2024 debut in the match with NJIT and is coming off a 9-7-4 (5-4-1 Big Ten) campaign in 2023. The Scarlet Knights competed in the NCAA Tournament last season, losing by a score of 2-1 in the first round against Columbia.
Rutgers' defense is anchored by Emily Mason, who was named a Defender to Watch by the United Soccer Coaches for the second straight season. She contributed to ten team shutouts in 2023.
