Track and Field Competes At Mets Outdoors & Delaware Invite

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. & NEWARK, Del. — The NJIT track and field teams had quite the busy Saturday, splitting their weekend participation between the Metropolitan Outdoor Championships at Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex and the University of Delaware Invitational.

METS HIGHLIGHTS

Both Highlander teams finished in the top five of the competition that featured at least 14 teams on each side. The NJIT women placed fourth (70 pts) and the men took fifth (58 pts) overall.
Highlander event winners included: Maddie Stevens in the 200 meters (25.18); Sarah Van Ornum in the 5000 meters (17:39.82); and both 4x800 Relays (Nadia Zhecheva/Julia Canonaco/Sarah Van Ornum/Jenna Keith, 9:30.06; Fabian Herrera/David Munera/Khalid Itani/Joseph Mucci, 8:01.53)
NJIT's other medalists at the Championships were: Hayley Lucido in the 400 meters (bronze, 58.99), Iciar Rubio Gonzalez in the Discus (silver, 36.07m / 118-4.00); Jacob Leigh (silver, 48.52); Jaden Dixon in the Hammer (bronze, 50.98m / 167-3.00); and the women's 4x400 Relay (silver, 3:53.83; Grace Burke/Sanai Jenkins/Hayley Lucido/Maddie Stevens)
Other top-five finishes came from: Grace Burke in the 400 meters (4th, 59.09); Ethan Kalajian in the 5000 meters (4th, 15:52.18); Justin Villamizar in the Discus (42.43m / 139-2.00); Nelagh Matthews in the 100 hurdles (5th, 16.36); Lillian Williams in the 100 meters (5th, 12.92); Gabriel Truehart in the 400 meters (4th, 49.49); Timothy Sondej in the 400 hurdles (5th, 1:00.41); and the men's 4x400 Relay (5th, 3:22.03; Lossenie Fofana/Damon Dukes, Jr./Trotman Kertes/Gabriel Truehart)

DELAWARE HIGHLIGHTS

A number of NJIT's jumpers made the separate trek to Delaware to hone their leaps in the Long and Triple Jumps.
Ryan Nartey (LJ; 6.44m / 21-1.50) and Jordan Lindinger-Asamoah (TJ; 14.12m / 46-4.00) each finished third in their respective events and 4th in the opposite one.
Marvellous Bassey (13.47m / 44-2.50) took fifth in the Triple Jump as NJIT's final top-five finisher.
Other competitors at the event included Waheeb Khan (7th in Long Jump, 8th in Triple Jump) and Kendall Caballero (12th in Long Jump)
