BOSTON — Juniors Joseph Mucci and Maddie Stevens have been named to the 2024 America East Indoor Track & Field All-Academic teams, the league announced on Wednesday afternoon.
Mucci, a native of Mountain Lakes, was named the America East Men's Indoor Elite 18 winner as the male student-athlete with the highest GPA at February's conference Championships. The Mathematical Sciences and Computer Science double major maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA while contributing to two scoring relays (DMR and 4x800 Relay) and setting a PR in the 1000 meters at AEs.
Stevens, a native of Nashua, N.H., logged a 3.87 GPA as a Biology major while leading the Highlander women to their best performance at the Indoor Championships since NJIT joined the America East in July 2020. Stevens earned her second career AE silver in the 400 meters and a bronze in the 4x400 Relay to move her program-leading AE indoor medal count to three. All four AE medals won by NJIT (400m, 500m, 4x400 Relay, DMR) at Indoors were on the women's side - a first for the Highlander program.
The All-Academic honors for Mucci and Stevens are the firsts of their careers, and Stevens' selection is the first ever for a Highlander woman in the America East in Indoor, Outdoor, or Cross Country. The last Highlander to earn women's conference All-Academic honors was
Sarah Morgan in the ASUN in 2020 (indoor). Mucci's selection is the first for a Highlander man for Indoor since Brian McGlew in 2022 and the ninth total on the men's side across Indoor (2), Outdoor (2), and XC (5).
To be eligible for All-Academic, student-athletes must have sophomore athletic eligibility, attain a 3.30 minimum grade-point average and be a contributor on their team. The squad is voted on by a committee comprised of America East student-athlete support and athletic communications administrators as well as faculty athletic representatives.
