NEWARK, NJ - The NJIT men's tennis team will welcome three newcomers to its 2023-24 roster, third-year Head Coach Marco Mateeucci announced on Monday.
Joining the Highlanders this season will be a pair of transfers, Pablo Salar Carrera and German Lopez Andujar, as well as freshman Severin Risan.
"I am looking forward to begin the fall season with our newcomers and returners, explained Matteucci. "Last year we set the standard, we know what our goals are, and I believe we won't skip a beat going into the fall."
The Highlanders will look to build off a 2022-23 season in which they won 15 matches. A full schedule for this season will be announced in the coming weeks.Â
Pablo Salar Carrera
Carrera joins the Highlanders after a four-year career at Rider. The Barcelona, Spain, native was four-time MAAC Academic Honor Roll recipient and spent his first three seasons as a Bronc in the top singles position. Last season, Carrera played across the top five singles spots and finished with five victories. He will be pursuing a Master of Science in data science.
Matteucci on Carrera:Â I am happy to have Pablo join the team as a graduate student. He fits in well with our team and I am excited to have his experience on the team after playing for 4 year in college prior to NJIT.Â

German Lopez Andujar
Andujar comes to Newark from Thomas Jefferson University, a Division II institution in Philadelphia. A native of Sevilla, Spain, Andujar was 11-3 in singles action last season, including 6-1 at the top spot and 5-2 at the #2 position. Andujar is a two-time CACC Champion and was twice named First-Team All-Conference. He will have two years of eligibility at NJIT. He intends to major in general engineering.Â
Matteucci on Andujar: German is a great addition having achieved an ATP doubles ranking of #1557, and will have immediate impact on our lineup. Last year he had great year helping Jefferson reach the round of 16 of the NCAA Division II National Championship and followed that up early this summer by reaching the semis of a 25k professional tournament in Cordoba.

Severin Risan
Risan hails from Vollen, Norway and will be a freshman in 2023-24. He was a Norweigen Champion at the 19U level and also helped lead his team to a Norwegian Team Champion at that level. Additionally, Risan won the championship at the Grand Prix Kristiansand. He intends to major in general engineering.Â
Matteucci on Severin: Severin had steady progress through his time playing in Norway and is ranked #2 in his age group. He will certainly be contributing to our team this year and we look forward to keep developing over the years.Â
