NEWARK, N.J. — The America East Conference released its 2023 Men's Lacrosse awards on Wednesday afternoon and four Highlanders were recognized for their efforts this season.
Redshirt junior Owen Corry was named to the All-Conference Second Team while senior Liam Brown, junior Garrett Muscatella and junior Isaac Vanzomeren earned spots on the All-Academic team.
Corry, an attacker from Glen Rock who was named to the America East All-Rookie team in 2021, set career highs in goals (22), assists (13), points (35), shots (104), and shots on goal (65) while adding 11 ground balls and four caused turnovers. He finished the regular season ranked in the top 15 in the league in assists per game (1.00. T-11th), points per game (2.69, 15th) and shots per game (8.00, 5th).
Corry scored his 50th career goal at Merrimack on April 8 and would finish the season with a career total of 56 goals, third all-time at NJIT and one shy of second place (57, Ryan Darrow). He also posted half of a 20-game point streak this year that ended against UAlbany and added four games of 3+ goals to his ledger, including a season-high four at Binghamton on March 25.
Corry's honor marks the first time in program history an NJIT men's lacrosse player has earned first or second team all-conference honors.
Brown, a goalkeeper from Cedar Grove, was named to the All-Academic team for the third consecutive year after earning spots in
2021 and
2022. He was selected this year after posting a 3.85 GPA while majoring in Biomedical Engineering.
Brown played every minute in goal for the Highlanders and made a career-high and America East-leading 192 saves in 2023. His 14.77 saves per game during the regular season led the conference and all of NCAA Division I. Brown reached 500 career saves against Merrimack on April 8 and ended the year with 550 career stops, second all-time at NJIT (Nick Marzullo, 579).
Brown made double-digit stops in every game - including a season-best 20 in the opener at Siena - and the 38 saves he made in the first two games of the year were the second-most of his career (40 in 2020; 19 at Delaware on 2/15/20; 21 vs Lehigh on 2/22/20). He posted four of the top 15 save performances in the conference this year (20 at Siena, 18 vs Mount St. Mary's, Lindenwood, and Bryant) and ended the regular season in the top ten nationally among active leaders with his 550 saves (currently ninth).
Muscatella, a midfielder from Long Valley, makes his first-ever appearance on the All-Academic team after producing a 3.85 GPA and majoring in Biomedical Engineering.
Muscatella was named America East Offensive Player of the Week for the first time on March 13 after helping lead the Highlanders to a thrilling 14-13 win over Lindenwood on March 11. On the year, Muscatella exploded for career numbers in goals (22), assists (8), points (30), shots (55), shot percentage (.400), shots on goal (37), and ground balls (19) while matching his career high with three caused turnovers. He also had four games with at least three goals, including setting a career high with four goals on two occasions - against Lindenwood on March 11 and at UAlbany on April 15. In between, he set career highs in assists and points in a three-goal, three-assist effort at Merrimack on April 8.
Vamzomeren, a faceoff specialist from Blaine, MN, earned his first spot on an AE All-Academic team after logging a 3.90 GPA while majoring in Financial Technology.
Vanzomeren was part of a two-pronged attack at the faceoff X for NJIT, ranking fourth in the league in faceoff percentage (.516) while also placing sixth in total faceoff wins (98), fifth in total ground balls (64) and sixth in ground balls per game (4.92). He was also a threat to provide instant offense as he added six goals on the year - tripling his output from the previous two years.
NJIT's three All-Academic selections among the ten-member team were the most in the league.
