Track and Field Ends AE Indoors With Six Event Medals

2/19/2023 7:22:00 PM

BOSTON — A year after making their debut on the America East Indoor Championships stage, the NJIT track and field teams made significant progress in their second go-through this weekend at The Track and New Balance facility.

HIGHLANDER HIGHLIGHTS
  • After Jacob Leigh helped NJIT secure its first two medals ever at AE Indoors in 2022 (Bronzes in High Jump, 4x400 Relay), both teams combined for three times as many in 2023 (six; 5 solo, 1 relay)
  • Leigh and Maddie Stevens led the Highlanders teams at the meet this weekend. Leigh scored 20 points during Indoors, earning him a share of the AE Male Coaches' Award - given to the student athlete that scores the most points at the Championships - alongside Most Outstanding Male Track Performer Travis Williams of UAlbany. Leigh earned three medals (silver in 200m and 4x400; bronze in High Jump) and scored in four different events (5th in 60 Meters). Stevens paced the Highlander women, earning NJIT's first women's AE Indoor medal with a silver in the 400 meters that was only .17 seconds off the winning pace. Along with a sixth place run with the 4x400 Relay, Stevens led the NJIT with 8.75 points scored.
  • NJIT also picked up medals in the men's triple jump (bronze by Jaden Johnson) and men's 500 meters (bronze by Elisha Bugasch) to round out their hardware count.
  • After ten PRs and two score records were set on Saturday, another seven PRs and two school marks were set on Sunday.
YEAR-OVER-YEAR POINT INCREASES
  • Men: 51 in 2023 (+31 from 2022)
  • Women: 16 in 2023 (+5 from 2022)
