Women's Soccer Shut Out By Binghamton In Regular Season Finale

NEWARK, N.J. — The 2023 regular season ended for the NJIT women's soccer team with a 2-0 defeat against the America East-leading Binghamton Bearcats Thursday evening at Lubetkin Field at Mal Simon Stadium.

The Highlanders (7-6-5, 3-4-1 AE) were vying to upset the now back-to-back AE regular season champion Bearcats (6-4-6, 5-0-3 AE) and put themselves in position to potentially host their America East quarterfinal matchup but Binghamton would earn the victory thanks to a 19th minute cross connection and an 81st minute insurance goal.

Despite narrowly losing the overall shots battle (12-10), NJIT produced more chances on goal (6-4) and were only kept from the back of the net by a season-high performance from Binghamton goalkeeper Kaitlyn Williams.

Despite the loss, NJIT - who is locked into the No. 5 seed for next week's America East Championship tournament - will enter postseason play after an extremely positive regular season:
  • NJIT finished the regular season 7-6-5 overall, the program's first winning regular season before playoffs since 2018 (11-4-2).
  • The Highlanders were able to bounce back after every bit of adversity, not losing consecutive games at any time this year for the first time since 2018.
  • Four players were recognized during the season for outstanding performances: Briana Andreoli (Offensive POTW, Oct. 23), Merle Hueser (Rookie, Sept. 11), Maria Nogueira (Offensive, Sept. 5) and Gabby Zalot (Offensive, Aug. 21).
  • The berth in the postseason is the third straight for the Highlanders in the America East and fifth in eight seasons under head coach Ally Nick (2018-19 ASUN, 2021-23 AE).

NEXT UP
No. 5 NJIT will learn where they will head for the 4/5 matchup after the conclusion of Friday's Maine-New Hampshire contest, which was rescheduled out of respect for those affected by Wednesday's tragedy in Lewiston, Maine. The finalized bracket will be released at 7 p.m on Friday, October 27. A victory for NJIT in the 4/5 match would set up a semifinals rematch with Binghamton on Thursday, November 2 in Vestal, N.Y.
