No. 5 Women's Soccer Defeated In America East Quarterfinals By No. 4 UMass Lowell

LOWELL, Mass. — The No. 5 seed NJIT women's soccer team saw its 2023 campaign come to a close in a 3-1 America East quarterfinal loss to the No. 4 seed UMass Lowell River Hawks Monday evening at UML's Cushing Field.

The Highlanders' third consecutive year qualifying for the America East tournament concludes with an overall record of 7-7-5, which includes a 3-4-1 mark during the AE regular season.

UMass Lowell improves to 4-5-7 (3-2-2 AE) and advances to face top seeded Binghamton in the America East semifinals.

NJIT fell behind in the rain-soaked affair after UMass Lowell scored off a close range free kick in the 15th minute and the hosts doubled their advantage in the 26th minute on a corner kick header.

Further complicating NJIT's comeback efforts was the loss of sophomore Riley Jones, who was assessed a pair of questionable yellow cards (28', 33') and the subsequent red card less than five minutes apart to leave the Highlanders to battle with ten players the rest of the contest.

The shorthanded Highlanders held the River Hawks scoreless for more than 37 minutes after Jones' dismissal before posting their third (71') on a second ball out of a corner kick.

NJIT kept fighting despite the odds and pulled one back in the 77th minute on a 20-yard free kick strike from Bailey Chant - the graduate midfielder's third of the season and 12th of her career.

In defeat, goalkeeper Samantha Constantine reached double digit saves for the first time as a Highlander with a career-best 11 stops - tied for the second-most in the America East this year,

OTHER NOTES
  • The 7-7-5 overall record and appearance in the America East playoffs marks the first time since 2018 that NJIT has posted an overall record of .500 or better and made the conference tournament in the same year. That season, the Highlanders won a school record 11 games (11-5-2) and earned a bye into the ASUN semifinals as the No. 2 seed.
  • Chant's 12 career goals leaves her tied for second all-time in the NJIT Division I era (since 2006) with former Highlander great Kori Washington.
  • The 5-seed NJIT earned in 2023 is the second-best finish for the program in its three years of America East tournament play, behind the 3-seed it earned in 2021 and ahead of last year's 6-seed.
  • The team's 26 total goals this year are the second-most in a campaign in head coach Ally Nick's eight seasons, trailing only the 27 scored by the 2018 Highlanders.
ALL-CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM
  • Bailey Chant was named to the America East All-Championship team at the conclusion of the tournament, joining Ciara Adams (2022) and former teammate Siani Magruder (2021) as recipients of the honor.
