NEWARK, NJ–Visiting Vermont scored 41 first half points and cruised to a 65-32 road victory at NJIT Saturday night inside NJIT's Wellness and Events Center.
The Catamounts, winners of five in a row, improved to 13-6 overall, 5-2 in the America East while the Highlanders moved just below .500 (9-10) and 4-3 in the America East.
Leading the game was Anna Olson with a game-best 14 points on a perfect 7-for-7 from the field followed by Delaney Richason with 10 points, six blocks and four rebounds.
The Catamounts held a 45-to-36 advantage on the glass paced by Bella Vito and Maria Myklebust with six rebounds apiece. Guard Emma Utterback chipped in eight points, dished out seven assists and pulled down three rebounds in the win.
For NJIT, Maria Fux and Alejandra Zuniga each posted seven points followed by Kenna Squier's six points and game-best eight rebounds.
Visiting Vermont got off to a hot start to begin the game, outscoring NJIT, 21-4, in the first 10 minutes. Alejandra Zuniga and Trinity Williams scored two points each in the period.
The Catamounts exploded for 20 second-period points, heading into halftime with a 41-10 advantage. Eight of the nine Catamount players scored at least two points while NJIT had five different players score two points.
Vermont finished the first half shooting 62.1 percent from the field and 44.4 percent from three-point range. NJIT won the rebounding advantage, 20-to-17, led by Kenna Squier with four rebounds in the first half.
NJIT scored the first five points of the third quarter but the double-digit deficit for the Highlanders was too much to overcome as Vermont went on to win 65-32.
The Highlanders will return to action on the road on January 25 at UMBC. The game is slated to tip off at 7pm.
