Wagner Rallies To Defeat Men's Lacrosse, 7-5

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The NJIT men's lacrosse team came out strong in their non-conference matchup against Wagner but could not hold on as the host Seahawks rallied to defeat the Highlanders, 7-4, Saturday afternoon at Hameline Field.

Gavyn Willson once again led the way for NJIT (0-5) with a pair of goals while Beck Gozdenovich, Gage Adams, and Owen Corry added a goal apiece. Collin Fogerty, Myles Hickey and Adams also chipped in an assist each.

Matthew Bowerman matched the game-high with a career-best-typing five ground balls while Lynch Raby also matched a career-high with three caused turnovers.

Billy Kroeger was nearly perfect from on faceoffs, going 8-for-9 on the afternoon and Liam Brown stopped 18 shots for his eighth career game with at least 18 saves.

1ST QUARTER
  • After a long feeling out process between the two teams over the first ten minutes, Willson pushed his season goal total to seven with a pair of goals at the 5:14 (unassisted) and 4:04 (from Adams; man-up) marks.
  • With four seconds remaining in the quarter, Beck Gozdenovich scored his first goal of the year on Myles Hickey's first collegiate assist.
2ND QUARTER
  • Wagner scored their first goal of the game with 13:19 to go in the second, converting on a long shot from past midfield.
  • The Seahawks tied the contest at 3-3 after netting a pair of goals within nine seconds of each other (6:28 to 6:19) and took their first lead with a goal with 3:19 left in the half
3RD QUARTER
  • NJIT ended the period still trailing by one goal after an even 1-1 quarter. Wagner extended their lead to 5-3 midway through the third (7:31) before Owen Corry trimmed the lead back to one with his third goal of the season (3:03)
4TH QUARTER
  • Wagner set the final margin with a pair of goals (9:15, 5:27).
OTHER NOTES
  • The Highlanders struggled to convert on extra-man opportunities, going 1-7 in the game with a penalty advantage.
  • Willson left the game with 11:09 left in the third with an injury.
