Track Begins Outdoor Season With Strong Showing At Monmouth Opener

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. — The NJIT men's and women's track and field teams kicked off their outdoor seasons on Saturday, taking part in the 26th Annual Monmouth University Track & Field Opener.

HIGHLANDER VICTORIES
  • The 4x400 Relay quartet of Matthew Bacchi, Eugene Graves III, Jacob Leigh, and Hamza Qureshi earned the top spot in the 4x400 Relay with a leading time of 3:22.51.
  • Thomas Van Saders won the 400 Hurdles with a time of 55.32
  • Thomas Kelly earned the first field event win of the outdoor season, logging a javelin toss of 54.15m / 177-8.00 to lead the competition.
TOP PERFORMANCES
  • Van Saders also came close to winning the 110 Hurdles, with a 15.51 time that was .28 seconds off the lead.
  • Sydne Nance was the runner-up in the 400 Meters after running a 57.93. She also just missed out on a top-three finish in the 200 meters, taking fourth with a time of 25.01.
  • Jacob Leigh took third overall in the 400 Meters, finishing with a time of 48.21.
  • Waheeb Khan ended the triple jump in third place after a leap of 12.87 / 42-2.75.
  • The women's and men's 4x100 Relays placed second and third, respectively. Nia Holloway, Nance, Lillian Williams, and Jadyn Otto ended the race with a time of 52.05 while Ndubuisi Obi, Hamza Qureshi, Eugene Graves III and Leigh combined to run a 42.50.
  • Grace Burke, Zhecheva, McKinleigh Mattie, and Nance added another second place finish to the Highlander tally with a 4x400 Relay mark time of 4:06.27.
OTHER TOP TENS NEXT UP
NJIT will travel to William & Mary next weekend (April 1-2) for the Colonial Relays.
