Track and Field Wraps Rutgers Open With Four More Program Bests

2/13/2022 2:19:00 AM

NEW YORK, N.Y. — The NJIT men's and women's track and field teams continued to excel on the second day of the Rutgers University Open Saturday evening at The Armory.

In addition to the four combined school and school freshman records set on Friday (Men's 4x200m, Women's 1000m, Men's 5000m Freshman, Women's 60 Hurdles Freshman), the Highlanders laid claim to four more program marks on Saturday:
  • After several close calls this season, Jacob Leigh finally eclipsed John Porteous' nearly eight-year old 200 meters record of 21.97 with a third-place run of 21.90.
  • The 600 meters mark held by recent graduate Alex Ortega would have fallen twice in the same race. David Munera (1:22.05; 7th place) now owns the record, with Matthew Bacchi (1:22.41, 9th) not finishing far behind, and both passing Ortega's mark of 1:23.18 from 2016.
  • Cassandra Raia took down a nearly eleven-year-old record in the 3000 meters, replacing Ewelina Marut's 2011 time of 10:37.93 with her own 10:34.16.
  • Nadia Zhecheva struck again Saturday, taking the 600 meter freshman record from Kathryn Nyby (2015; 1:47.48) with a new time of 1:38.57.
OTHER NOTABLE FINISHES NEXT UP
NJIT will look to take its momentum into the America East Championships in two weeks (February 25-26).
