NEW HAVEN, CT - Several members of the NJIT men's tennis team traveled to Connecticut this weekend to compete in the Yale Invitational, which was held on the Bulldogs' campus from Friday through Sunday.
The Highlanders were highlighted by a pair of sophomores in
Oscar Callo von Platen and
Pablo Perez Ramos, who each picked up impressive singles victories. Callo von Platen won his flight at the event, while Perez Ramos was defeated in the championship round.
"Yale's tournament was a great event for us to attend, it really helped our guy compete and be successful at a higher level," said second-year Head Coach
Marco Matteucci.Â
Callo von Platen started the weekend with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Boston College's Will Kasten and earned a spot in the championship by way of a 6-3, 6-3 win over Tomas Gomez of Marist. The sophomore took on Yale's Renaud Levevre in the flight championship and won in three sets (4-6, 7-5, 6-3) to take home the title.Â
"Oscar had a great weekend winning his second tournament of the fall," added Matteucci. "I am very happy with his progress"
Perez Ramos defeated two players from Yale to reach the championship. He defeated Luke Neal (6-4, 7-6(2) and Aiden Reilly (2-6, 6-3, 6-4) to earn a chance for his second title of the fall, but ultimately was defeated in the championship match.Â
"Pablo had two fantastic wins beating two highly-rated players from Yale, and just falling short in the final's to Yale's top player," explained Matteucci. "I couldn't be more excited about Pablo's progress after sitting out a year and finally being able to play at his full potential!"
Pavel Petrov also took the court for the Highlanders in New Haven and was defeated in his first match, but bounced back to earn a three-set victory over Chun Lam from Brown, winning 6-7(5), 6-3, 6-2.
