Rider Rallies To Defeat Women's Soccer

LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. --- Despite controlling much of the game's possession and play, the NJIT women's soccer team could not fend off the Rider Broncs, falling 2-1 Wednesday evening at Ben Cohen Field.

NJIT (2-5) edged out Rider (2-2-1) in total shots (10-8) and used their 10-1 advantage in corner kicks to open the game's scoring.

After a scoreless first half, the Highlanders took the lead in the 59th minute as freshman Caroline Caputo's perfectly placed corner from the left side was headed in by fellow newcomer Ciara Adams for her first collegiate points. The goal also marked the third straight match that the Highlanders were able to score from their corner kick set pieces.

NJIT's score would be matched in short order as Rider would tie up the game five minutes later (64').

The Broncs would pull ahead in the 80th minute after a failed clearance was intercepted by Rider and put home. NJIT appealed to officials that Rider was offsides on the play but the goal was upheld.

NJIT would get a couple of shot opportunities to tie the game in the final ten minutes - including a close range chance from junior Bailey Chant in the 88th minute - but could not capitalize.

Adams, Caputo, and sophomore transfer Gabby Zalot - who made her first start as a Highlander Thursday - led NJIT with two shots each. Chant, fifth years Christine Conaghy and Tara Walenczyk, and senior Siani Magruder each logged one shot.

Redshirt junior Molly Saylor was able to stop four shots in her 90 minutes of play - two in each half.
