Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Seton Hall Slips By Women's Soccer In First-Ever Meeting

NEWARK, N.J. --- The NJIT women's soccer team showed tremendous fight on the offensive end in its first-ever meeting against Seton Hall but the Highlanders could not end their inaugural matchup with the cross-county Pirates with a favorable result, suffering a 2-0 defeat Thursday evening at Lubetkin Field at Mal Simon Stadium.

NJIT (0-3) struggled to create scoring opportunities in its first two games at St. John's and against Monmouth (ten total shots, three on goal) but were able to attack more frequently against Seton Hall (2-0). The Highlanders outshot the Pirates 13-11, netting their most chances since outshooting Vermont, 14-12 in their America East home debut on March 25, 2021 (2020 season). NJIT also exceeded its season shots on goal tally on Thursday, putting four chances squarely on net.

However, despite the looks the team was able to produce, the Highlanders were unable to register a goal to reward their overall effort and help mitigate some unlucky breaks.

Seton Hall got on the board in the 55th minute after the Highlanders misplayed a ball from their near side back middle, leaving the Pirates one-on-one with goalkeeper Molly Saylor. Seton Hall's second score came in the 87th minute after an NJIT clearance from the Pirates box deflected backwards and gave the visitors another chance to push forward and score an assisted goal on the right side less than five yards out.

The NJIT offensive attack was led by freshman Caroline Caputo, who took three total shots and was the only Highlander to put multiple shots on goal. Junior Bailey Chant also recorded three shots while junior Nora O'Connor and freshman Ciara Adams logged two shots each and three other players - fifth year Yasmeen Malik, junior Lauren Chamberlain and sophomore transfer Gabby Zalot - netted one shot.

OTHER NOTES
  • In addition to outshooting Seton Hall, NJIT held a 6-1 edge in corner kicks and a 7-4 lead in total saves while drawing two fewer fouls (nine to 11).
  • NJIT's improved offensive performance coincided with the Highlanders adding a pair of healthy veterans to the rotation as O'Connor and fifth year Siani Magruder saw their first action of the season.
NEXT UP
NJIT will hit the road on Sunday, August 29 to face Pittsburgh. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra.
