Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women's Soccer Defeated By Pitt

PITTSBURGH --- The NJIT women's soccer team wrapped up a challenging four-game season opening stretch with a 5-0 loss to the Pittsburgh Panthers Sunday afternoon at Ambrose Urbanic Field

This game, like the season so far, provided adversity and chances to make improvements that may not show up on the box score or record column until later in the year.

NJIT (0-4) found itself playing shorthanded for the majority of the contest after Christine Conaghy was issued a red card for a collision that came on the tail end of one of the Highlanders' best offensive opportunities.

In the 27th minute, NJIT drew a free kick and Siani Magruder - who was making her first start of the season - delivered a ball into the box that bounced over the Pitt defense and was nearly headed home by Caroline Caputo. The deflection after Pitt's goalkeeper made the save went toward the right post, where Conaghy pursued for a second shot but collided with a Panther defender.

Despite being undermanned, the Highlanders showed flashes of improving defensive organization, especially with Magruder back anchoring the back line.

Pitt scored a pair of goals in the first half (17', 40') and added three others in the second (56', 62', 83').

Molly Saylor once again had a busy day in goal and found ways to be impactful. After making four saves in the opener at St. John's, Saylor has either set or matched a season high in saves in every game: seven against Monmouth, seven against Seton Hall and ten today against Pitt.

NEXT UP
NJIT returns to Lubetkin Field for a pair of home games, beginning September 2 against Wagner. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
