NEWARK, NJ – The NJIT men's hockey team was looking to rebound after dropping the last two contests to the Monmouth Hawks in their 7-game season series. The result tonight however was the Hawks winning their third straight game over the Highlanders 8-2. Monmouth now leads the season series 3-2 and NJIT's home record at RWJBarnabas Health Hockey House is at 1-3.
Matt Torre opened the scoring early in the 1 st period at 3:03.
Michael Caufield who made his season debut on Saturday, got his 1 st point of the season with the lone assist. Monmouth would score the next three goals and would lead 3-1 after the 1 st intermission. The Highlanders would fight back with an early 2 nd period by
Ted Lee to make it a one-goal game. The only assist on Lee's goal went to
Christian Culp. Monmouth would once again respond with two late period goals and they would extend their lead to three goals with a 5-2 advantage after two periods.
The 3 rd period was all Hawks as they got 3 more goals to win by that 8-2 final score.
Brian Byrnes made 31 saves in tonight's game. NJIT will wrap up the season with games against Monmouth this weekend. The 1 st game will be on the road at Jersey Shore Arena at 7 PM on
Saturday.
The season finale will be at RWJBarnabas Health Hockey House at 7 PM on Sunday.
