NEWARK, NJ - After a difficult showing in Connecticut against Sacred Heart on Saturday afternoon, the Highlanders were once again looking for their 1st MCHC game this season. They finally did just that in dramatic fashion with a 3-2 overtime win over the Western Connecticut State University Wolves. NJIT is now 3-5 in ACHA games and 1-4 in MCHC conference play.
After a scoreless 1st period, The Wolves scored early in the 2nd period to break the ice. Brandon Clayton got a much needed tying power play goal off a cross-ice feed from Bergen with 16 seconds remaining. It would remain 1-1 after 40 minutes of play.
Western Connecticut would regain the lead a second after their power play expired less than two minutes into the 3rd period. A few minutes later, Clayton would get his 2nd goal of the game to tie the game at 2-2. Sal Micciche got the lone assist on Clayton's 2nd goal. The rest of the period was a back-and-forth affair where both teams got great opportunities, but the score remained even after regulation.
Noah Bergen would win the game 1:11 into overtime after circling, creating space and firing from the left circle. Micciche would get his 2nd assist on the Bergen winning goal. Elliot Marken made 28 saves for his 2nd win of the season.
