NEWARK, NJ – The NJIT men's club hockey team was looking to extend their winning streak over the Monmouth Hawks to 3 games as the teams continue their 7-game set of games.
Monmouth had other plans as they defeated the Highlanders 5-2 this afternoon. NJIT is now 2-1 vs. Monmouth this season and 1-2 at home at RWJBarnabas Health Hockey House this season.
The Hawks got the ice breaker with less than nine minutes left in the 1 st period.
James Copeland quickly tied the game with his team leading 5 th goal of the season just 44 seconds later.
The teams would go into the 1 st intermission with the score even at 1-1. NJIT got the lead when
Rohan Ganta scored his 1 st of the season at the halfway point of the period. Monmouth would tie the game with less that 5 minutes remaining in the period.
Once again, the teams would be even after another period of action at 2-2. The Hawks would dominate the 3 rd period as they had the stronger play on both ends and the Highlanders could not really gain any sustained attack or pressure.
They would score all 3 goals in the period and would win by the final score of 5-2.
Brian Byrnes made 48 saves in another solid performance.

The Highlanders will continue the set with Monmouth with 2 games next weekend. 1 st game will be Saturday night at 7 PM at Jersey Shore Arena and the 2 nd game will be Sunday night at 7 PM at RWJBarnabas Health Hockey House.
