Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Men's Lacrosse Plays First-Ever America East Game, Falls To Binghamton

NEWARK, N.J. —- In the first-ever conference game in program history, the NJIT men's lacrosse team suffered an 11-5 defeat to the Binghamton Bearcats Saturday afternoon at Lubetkin Field at Mal Simon Stadium.

The contest was NJIT's first conference game as a member of the America East Conference after playing 2020 as a Northeast Conference affiliate but not facing a league opponent (COVID-19) and playing as an independent for the program's first five years.

Collin Fogerty (2 G) and Owen Corry (1 G, 1 A) paced NJIT (0-3) with a pair of points each. Gavyn Willson and Jack Bowie added to the Highlander scoring with a goal apiece while Max Wilson and Logan Hone each recorded assists. Corry also led the team with six ground balls and was one of four players with two caused turnovers (Fogerty, Luke Binder, Garrett Muscatella).

In net, Liam Brown played all 60 minutes and made 13 saves for his second double-digit save game of the season and fifth of his career.

NJIT's excitement for the historic game propelled them to score the first goal of the game as Hone set up Bowie at the 11:20 mark of the first quarter for the Highlanders' first score in America East competition. NJIT would add a second goal from Willson but go into the second down, 4-2.

Corry's unassisted tally with 12:25 left in the second kept the Highlanders within two (5-3) but Binghamton (1-0) used a 3-1 run to take an 8-4 lead into halftime. Fogerty's extra man goal at the 8:50 mark of the second was NJIT's final score of the opening half.

Any nerves from both teams that led to 12 combined goals seemed to disappear in the third quarter as the second half opened with a scoreless 15 minutes.

Unfortunately, it was Binghamton that would restart the game's scoring with three of the four goals in the fourth. Fogerty's final score came off an assist from Wilson in the final minutes of the game.

OTHER NOTES
  • Fogerty's man-up goal in the second quarter kept NJIT's three-game streak of successful extra man opportunities alive. The Highlanders have converted at least one penalty chance in every game this season, maxing out at three last week against No. 16/17 Lehigh (3-4).
NEXT UP
NJIT will play its first America East road game on Saturday, March 13 at Stony Brook. First faceoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
