NEWARK, NJ--NJIT men's soccer coach Fernando Barboto announced the addition of Emiliano Cabellero who will join the Highlanders in the Fall 2020.
Caballero is the seventh addition to the 2020 roster for the Highlanders, joining Jose Escandon who played for the Red Bulls Academy, transfers J.J. Gaeir and Raul Macedo, Alex Popa, who played for Vardar SC, 6-foot-2 goalkeeper Caden Pellito and Tomas Jorge from Portugal.
Caballero, the 2019 Union County Player of the Year, led Elizabeth High School (9-0-1) in capturing Union County Conference's Watchung Division, Union County Tournament co-Champions and North 2, Group 4 Champion titles. It marked the second straight year Caballero guided Elizabeth to a win in a sectional championship.
"Emiliano is a local talent from Elizabeth, NJ, who earned first-team All-State in 2019 with 13 goals and nine assists," Barboto added. "His technical ability and soccer IQ will fit nicely within our team."
The star captain at Elizabeth, was a United Soccer Coaches All-East Region and All-County first-team selection, scoring 13 goals and tallied nine assists at the midfield position. He provided the lone goal off a PK in the sectional finals against Scotch Plains-Fanwood in the first half to secure the victory.
Caballero played for Cedar Stars DA Monmouth Academy.
The Highlanders enter the 2020 season after capturing the first-ever ASUN Conference regular season and tournament title (in any sport at NJIT) and first appearance in the NCAA Tournament at the Division I level.
The America East Conference and New Jersey Institute of Technology announced that the Highlanders will be the 10th full member institution of the America East, effective for the 2020-21 academic year.
