NJIT Rallies Back to Score 16 Runs in the Last Two Innings; Registers 18-11 Win at Saint Peter’s


JERSEY CITY, NJ—Trailing 11-2 in the seventh, NJIT rallied back and scored 16 runs in the final two innings, posting a season-best mark in runs, with an 18-11 come-from-behind victory at Saint Peter's Tuesday afternoon in conclude the non-conference slate at Jaroschak Field.

NJIT, which has won the last four-out-of-six games, moves to 16-25-1 overall while Saint Peter's drops to 4-41 on the season.

The 18 runs scored by NJIT, is the most scored by the Highlanders since the 2012 season (18-4 win at Delaware State on March 4).

Sophomore righty Bryce Short (1-1) the Highlanders sixth pitcher in the mid-week game was credited with the win, pitching a perfect eighth and ninth, fanning three Peacock batters.

DH David Marcano led the Highlander offense, driving in five RBI, finishing 2-for-6 with two runs followed by freshman 2B Brett Helmkamp, who finished 4-for-6 with three RBI and two runs.

Four different Highlanders – Matthew Cocciadiferro (2-for-4), Justin Etts (3-for-5), Jared Donnelly (1-for-4) and Michael Anastasia (2-for-4) each drove in a pair of runs in the victory.

Saint Peter's jumped out to a 9-0 lead after three complete innings.

NJIT scored its first runs of the ball game in the bottom of the fourth, as C Paul Franzoni stole second and Etts scored on the throwing attempt down to second.  Anastasia drove in the second Highlander run with an RBI single to right field, scoring Franzoni.

The Peacocks added a pair of runs in the top of the seventh, extending its lead, 11-2.

NJIT exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the seventh, sparked by back-to-back home runs in the innings by Helmkamp and Julio Marcano.  Helmkamp's blast to left field was his first of his collegiate career while Julio Marcano registered his eighth on the year. 

David Marcano doubled to left field, scoring three runs and Helmkamp, which led off the inning, hit an RBI single to left field, cutting the deficit to 11-9.

In the eighth, NJIT produced nine runs, after a leadoff home run by Cocciadiferro, his fourth of the season, slimming the Peacock lead to within one, 12-11. 

NJIT took its first lead of the game, 12-11, on a double to center field by Jared Donnelly, scoring Franzoni and Etts.

The runs kept coming, as David Marcano's double to center field, drove in a pair of runs and Helmkamp's double to left center, put the Highlanders ahead, 15-11.

Cocciadiferro recorded an RBI single to left field and Etts capped off the Highlander scoring with a double to left center, scoring two runs, pushing its lead to 18-11.

NJIT will wrap up ASUN Conference action this weekend hosting first-place FGCU on May 10-12.  The series will open on Friday at 3pm and 12Noon start times for Saturday and Sunday.

The Highlanders will honor its seven graduating seniors – Justin Etts, James Sofield, Michael Anastasia, Sean Lubreski, Edgar Badaraco, Tom Brady and Chris Gibbons in pregame ceremonies prior to Saturday's first pitch.
