Jacksonville Takes Baseball Series Opener, 6-5


BRIDGEWATER, NJ—Jacksonville won its fifth consecutive game of the season, taking the series opener at NJIT, 6-5, Friday afternoon in ASUN Conference action at Somerset Patriots TD Ball Park.

With the win, Jacksonville remains undefeated in ASUN play, 4-0, 17-9 overall while the Highlanders move to 8-11-1 overall, 1-3 in the league.

Due to inclement weather in the forecast on Sunday, the series against Jacksonville will now conclude on Saturday with a doubleheader, starting at 1pm at Somerset Patriots TD Ball Park.

The Dolphins Tyler Santana (3-1) pitched 8.2 innings, letting up three hits, five runs while fanning six Highlander batters.  Zach Bryant relieved Santana in the middle of the ninth, securing his team-best fifth save.

Freshman RHP Joe Georgini, the Highlanders second pitcher, was credited with the loss, dropping to 1-1 on the season, allowing three hits and three runs.  Junior RHP Jared Kacso had a no-decision, pitching 6.0 innings, striking out two Dolphins while freshman RHP Grant Vurpillat pitched the final two innings of action, striking out a pair of batters.

NJIT SS Justin Etts went 2-for-3 with a game-best four RBI and two runs, including his fourth home run of the season, a three-run blast in the bottom of the fourth.

Jacksonville got the scoring started in the top of first with an RBI groundout to second by Angel Camacho and two-out RBI single to shortstop by Cory Heffron for a 2-0 advantage.

NJIT took its first lead of the game in the bottom of the fourth, 3-2, on a two-out three-run home run to left field by SS Justin Etts.  The home run for the senior co-captain was his fourth of the season.

Jacksonville knotted the score in the top of the fifth with an unearned run for a 3-3 ball game and regained the lead in the top of the seventh after three runs, including a two-run homer by Camacho for a 6-3 lead.

In the bottom of the ninth, with two outs, NJIT scored its first run on an RBI single up the middle by Etts and RBI single to right field by DH Jared Donnelly, pulling with one of the Dolphins, 6-5.
