MOREHEAD, KY—Morehead State swept Saturday's doubleheader from visiting NJIT, 11-7 in game one and 21-5 in the nightcap in non-conference baseball action.
Morehead State moved to 9-1 in 2019, the best start in program history, while the Highlanders, who entered Saturday's doubleheader with its best start in the Division I era, suffered its first two loses of its young season, moving to 5-2-1.
MSU 11, NJIT 7 (Final)
In game one, NJIT scored the first run of the game and extended its lead to 6-2 after three complete innings. Senior DH
Justin Etts drove in the first run of the game with an RBI single to left field and followed up with a three-run homer in the top of the third, giving the Highlanders a 4-2 advantage. Sophomore 1B
Nick Hussey knocked out a two-run homer in the inning to push the Highlanders ahead, 6-2.
Morehead State scored at least one run in every inning, including four in the fifth to gain the lead, 8-6. Every run but one in the final five innings was scored on RBI singles.
The final Highlander run in the top of the ninth was a solo shot by
Bryce Short.
Etts finished the game 2-for-4 with four RBI and one run scored while Hussey went 1-for-4 with two RBI and one run. Four other Highlanders registered a hit in the loss.
NJIT starting pitcher
Sean Lubreski (2-1) was credited with the loss, pitching 4.2 innings, allowing 11 hits, seven runs while striking out four batters.
Tyler Stafflinger (2.1 innings, seven hits, three runs, three strikeouts) and
Grant Vurpillat (1.0 inning, three hits, one run) finished the game for the Highlanders.
MSU 21, NJIT 5 (Final)
In game two, Morehead State registered an 11-run second innings, including a grand slam by C Connor Pauly.
NJIT got on the board with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth with an RBI on a ground out by
Brett Helmkamp and RBI single
Bryce Short.
In the top of the sixth, NJIT added three runs, first on an RBI fielder's choice by
Tom Brady, an RBI ground out to the pitcher by
Joe Georgini and RBI double to center from
David Marcano.

David Marcano was the lone multi-hit Highlander, going 2-for-5 wit one RBI while three different Highlanders – Short, Brad and Georgini recorded an RBI.
The two teams are set to conclude its three-game series on Sunday at 12Noon. A decision on weather will be made on Sunday morning.
