Track and Field Set to Kick Off 2018 ASUN Conference Outdoor Championships

The regular ASUN Conference Outdoor Track and Field season is in the books as the NJIT men's and women's outdoor track and field teams gear up for the 2018 ASUN Conference Championships on Friday, May 11 and Saturday, May 12 at Hodges Stadium on the campus of University of North Florida.

NJIT MEN
The Highlanders will be competing in their third ASUN Championship all-time, looking to improve upon a fourth place finish in 2016 and 2017.

Thus far, the NJIT men have set four school-record and freshmen records, including 18 top five performances this season.

Senior Blake Brancato became the first Highlander to compete at the Penn Relays in the men's 3000 meter steeplechase.

At the Outdoor Metropolitan Championships, the men finished third, highlighted by Brancato, capturing his second steeplechase title of the season.

Brancato broke the Brick City Classic meet record in the 1500 meter run clocking in at 4:05.55.  He ranks fourth in the ASUN in the 5000 meter run at 4:45.48. 

Last season, Erick McNamara captured the gold in the men's javelin with a toss of 50.43.

NJIT WOMEN
The Highlanders will be competing in their third ASUN Championship all-time, looking to improve upon a sixth place finish 2017.

Thus far, the NJIT women have set three school-record and freshmen records, including 16 top five performances this season.

Top sprinter, Ayanna Garrett took first with a time of 25.70 in the women's 200 meter run and third in the 100 meter run with a time of 12.56 at the Outdoor Metropolitan Championships.

Freshman Miku Okada was the top performer for NJIT in the women's high jump with a height of 5-02.25 (1.58m), placing third at the METS.  Okada captured the Brick City Classic high jump title with a mark of 1.60m, seventh best in the ASUN.

NJIT owns the top javelin thrower in the conference in Alyssa Mitchko. She is first with a toss of 38.57m.

Shannon Turner and Kayla Breaux are NJIT two best throwers, both ranking in the top 15 in the shot put with throws of 11.09m and 10.19m.
