Track and Field Hosts Brick City Classic; Breaks Three Meet Records

– NJIT men's and women's track and field hosted the Brick City Classic on Sunday at Newark Schools Stadium.

It was also senior day for the Highlanders six seniors, Daniel Leung, Trish Roche, Emmanuel Agyen, Vanessa Marques, Erick McNamara and Blake Brancato.

The Highlanders dominated the field events on both the men's and women's sides.

Freshman Catello Acanfora won the men's hammer throw and Sawyer Gara came in second.

NJIT took the first three spots in the men's discus throw, with Billy Forrester leading the pack (38.40m) followed by Gara (38.25m) and Acanfora (35.54m).

In the men's pole vault the Highlanders took first and second with Issa Feknous grabbing the top spot with a 3.96m and Brian Nagotko coming in right after with a 3.81m mark.

Three Highlanders placed in the top five of the javelin throw, starting with Erick McNamara who placed 2nd with a mark of 45.76m. Calvin Gould and Gara finished in fourth and fifth respectively.

Senior Vanessa Marques came in first in the women's javelin throw posting a mark of 29.29m.

In the women's hammer throw, NJIT took 2-3-4 with Shannon Turner leading the pack, followed by Marques and Kayla Breaux.

Turner earned another win in the women's shot put and Breaux took third.

Freshman Breaux won the women's discus throw with a distance of 30.19m with junior Turner placing second getting a 29.64m.

Miku Okada won the women's high jump boasting a 1.60m mark.

In the 400 meter hurdles, Brian Azevedo placed second clocking in at 58.64 and on the women's side Trish Roche also came in second posting a record breaking time of 1:09.57.

The men's 4x100 relay team broke the meet record coming in at 42.58.

Blake Brancato broke another the meet record in the 1500 meter run clocking in at 4:05.55.

Ayanna Garrett and Daniel Leung took first place in the 100 meter dash, with Garrett coming in at 12.87 and Leung in 11 seconds.

Freshman Cassandra Raia won the 5000 meter run with a time of 19:23.60.

Next up for the Highlanders is the ASUN Outdoor Championships held at North Florida on May 11-12.
