NJIT Picks Up 6-4 Mid-Week Win at Saint Peter’s; Rappaport Records First Collegiate Win; Derer Posts Second Save of Season

JERSEY CITY, NJ—Freshman Jake Rappaport recorded his first collegiate win of his career and senior Tommy Derer posted his second save of the season in the Highlanders' 6-4 mid-week win at Saint Peter's Wednesday afternoon in non-conference baseball action at Jaroschak Field.

Tied at 4-4 heading, in the top of the eighth, 1B Julio Marcano led off the inning with a double and moved over to third on a sacrifice by twin brother 3B David Marcano.  DH Matthew Cocciadiferro reached first on an error by the Peacock's, scoring in Julio Marcano for the go ahead run, 5-4.

NJIT (15-14) plated a single run in the top of the ninth, taking a 6-4 advantage after an RBI single by Julio Marcano, driving in CF Jesse Uttendorfer, who led off the inning with a double.

Derer kept the Peacocks (0-28) scoreless in the bottom of the ninth, allowing one hit and securing the 6-4 victory.

NJIT, which used seven pitchers in the game, held the home team scoreless in the sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth innings.  Rappaport, the fifth pitcher for the Highlanders, pitched a scoreless and hitless sixth and seventh, notching his first collegiate win.

Julio Marcano led the Highlander offense, finishing 3-for-5 with three RBI and one run scored while SS Justin Etts and Uttendorfer went 2-for-4 while C Edgar Badaraco finished 2-for-2 with one run scored.

Saint Peter's starting pitcher Willie Krajnik was credited in a no-decision, pitching 7.0 innings, letting up seven hits and four runs (three earned) while striking out 11 Highlander batters.  Peacocks second pitcher, Aditya Chandel took the loss, pitching one inning (the eighth) allowing one hit and one run.

NJIT will return to ASUN Conference action, hosting Stetson on Friday at 6pm, Saturday at 1pm and wrapping up the three-game series on Sunday at 12pm.  All games will be played at Riverfront Stadium in Newark, NJ.
