NEWARK, NJ—Visiting Stetson edged NJIT, 4-3, in men's tennis ASUN Conference action on Saturday afternoon at The Naimoli Family Athletic and Recreational Facility.
NJIT (9-6, 1-2 ASUN) picked up wins at third, fifth and sixth singles but it wasn't enough to overcome visiting Stetson (14-3, 2-1 ASUN) as the Hatters earned the double point and earned wins at first, second and fourth singles to edge NJIT, 4-3.
"A real battle that represents the best of college tennis," head coach
Ira Miller added. "Up at third doubles, one deuce point away from going 5-5 at first doubles, but credit to Stetson for pulling out the doubles point. Stetson got two more points at first and second singles and we were down 3-0, but the boys dug in. Lukas (Zvikas) closed out in three. Richard (Rangga) won in straight sets. Zac (Castagna) won in a third set superbreaker. Freshman Abdallah (Fouad) battled hard but lost in three in the deciding match. We're hoping to get another shot at Stetson in the ASUN Championships."
Highlander
Lukas Zvikas battled out a three-set tilt at third singles, registering a 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 victory over Angus Bradshaw.
Co-captain
Zac Castagna was victorious in a three-set super tiebreaker, dropping the first set, 7-5, but bounced back with a 6-2, 10-5 victory over Linus Bergevi.
Richard Rangga, the Highlanders co-captain, was a straight set winner at the sixth spot, defeating William Shkrob, 6-3, 6-4.
NJIT, which concludes its home portion of its schedule will return to action on April 2 at St. John's.
In pregame ceremonies, NJIT honored its two graduating seniors
Jan Cimrman and Rangga.
