STATEN, ISLAND, NY—The NJIT men's and women's indoor track and field teams opened its 2018 campaign setting six NJIT school records on Saturday at the Fast Track Metro Season Opener at Ocean Breeze Complex.
"It was a great season opener for us where our depth allowed us great marks in all the event groups throws, jumps, sprints and distance events which included six new records and many top 5 all-time performances, head coach
Al Alonso added. "Every event group has been working very hard for the start of the season and today they came together like the great NJIT Highlander team they are. Excited for our next meet in just 6 days where I am sure new names will be added to the headlines!"
In the men's mile, junior
Ryan Budhu was the top finisher for NJIT with a time of 4:24.78, good for fifth place.
Ben Miller and
Weston Farrell followed, clocking in a 4:46.33 and 4:52.20, respectively for the Highlanders.
Highlander Gerad Gill won the men's 5k with an impressive finish, clocking in at 15:41.43. His time of 15:41.43 is a new personal-best.
Graduate student
Alex Ortega set a new indoor school record in the 500m with a time of 1:04.58. Ortega led off the NJIT recording breaking 4x400 relay, which consisted of
Acacio Escada,
Matt Bacchi and
Pritinder Singh. His race in the 500m qualified Ortega to compete in the 500m at the IC4A Championships.
Junior jumper
Nasiem Chandler broke the NJIT school record, placing first in the men's long jump with a distance of 6.97m. His distance ranks in the top 20 in the nation in Division I.
Freshman
Teslim Olunlade broke the NJIT freshman record in the triple jump, set in 2014.
Sprinter
Sydne Nance started off the season in the 400m with a time of 1:00.00. Nance and
Miku Okada placed with a mark of 1.55m in the women's high jump.
Freshman
Sara Wells set a new personal best and NJIT freshman school record in the women's shot put with a distance of 11.17m.
Senior
Shannon Turner set a new NJIT school record in the weight throw with a distance of 13.06m.
