STATEN ISLAND, NY—The NJIT men's and women's track and field teams opened the 2018 season on Friday at the St. Thomas Aquinas Spartan Invitational held at Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex.
Friday marked the third time hosting the event for St. Thomas Aquinas, which featured teams from the Northeast with approximately 2,000 of the best Division I, II & III athletes competing in various events.
Freshman
Miku Okada placed second against Division I competition in the women's high jump with a height of 1.60m.
Issa Feknous was the top finisher on the men's side, placing eighth with a height of 1.84m.
In the men's 60 meter dash, NJIT's
Kwaku Amponsah,
Daniel Leung and
Emmanuel Agyen went 1-2-3 against Division I competition, clocking in respectively at 7.06, 7.16 and 7.21.
Senior
Blake Brancato finished sixth in the men's mile run, clocking in at 4:33.34 for the Highlanders. On the women's side,
Cassandra Raia took eighth at 5:43.03.
Matthew DaSilva placed in the top four of the men's 800 meter run, clocking in with a time of 2:15.68.
Calvin Gould took third for NJIT in the men's pole vault with a height of 4.25m.
In the men's shot put,
Billy Forrester was the top finisher for NJIT with a distance of 11.95m.
The men's 4x400 relay team, which consisted of
Ali Merdan,
Acacio Escada,
Connor Penrod and Leung, placed second with a time of 3:32.52.
NJIT will return to action on January 19 when the Highlanders compete at the Ramapo Invitational in Mahwah, NJ.
