NJIT’s Naimoli Family Athletic and Recreational Tennis Facility Receives Upgrades

NEWARK, NJ—The Naimoli Family Athletic and Recreational Facility, home of the NJIT men's and women's tennis programs, has undergone extensive upgrades, which includes Musco's Lighting Solution System and The PlaySight Smart Court Technology.

In 2011, NJIT opened the 25,000-square foot indoor athletic facility that primarily serving as home to the men's and women's tennis teams, provides a home for NJIT's intramural programs, recreational sports, and practice facilities.

The fully air-conditioned Naimoli Recreational Facility includes a floor surface suitable for a variety of indoor recreational sports and intramural competitions.

Musco's Lighting Solution System uses an LED light source, and provides many benefits for players, spectators and television broadcasts.

Visibility is improved with advanced optics, which provides light with pinpoint precision to create a more uniform light on the courts and minimize glare from shining into the eyes of athletes.

The LED light source offers dimming and on/off controls, allowing for the light output to be varied on each court when full power of the system is not needed, saving additional energy.  Energy consumption is reduced by 57 percent when compared to previous lights.

A 10-year parts and labor warranty is backed by a team of technicians, which eliminates maintenance costs for the university.

Musco's controls and monitoring system allows for flexible control and solid management of the facility with easy-to-use scheduling via web-based software, 24/7 call center and mobile app.

"Improving our facilities is an ongoing effort, with the goal of making every facility the best it can be for our student-athletes," Assistant Vice President/Director of Athletics Lenny Kaplan added. "This improved lighting project is the first step in upgrading this great facility which is home to our men's and women's tennis teams."

The PlaySight Smart Court analyzes all aspects of game play, including but not limited to, serve speed, ball rotation, store all of the teams' workouts and home matches in the cloud, so that players and coaches are able to go back and review the play either through the on-court consoles or online at home.

"Our new state of the art lighting system and the addition of PlaySight technology helps give us one of the premier college tennis facilities in the northeast," head coach Ira Miller stated.  "The ability to record practice sessions, stroke production, live ball drills with the analytics PlaySight provides will be an invaluable tool for improving our overall performance.  Our new ability to livestream will add an additional dimension of interest and enthusiasm for our matches, when fans all over the world can view firsthand both conference and non-conference contests.  The tennis teams are deeply grateful to athletic director Lenny Kaplan, who not only asked me for a strategic plan for enhancing our building and our programs, but allocated the funds and delivered the effort to make it all possible."

Not only can the system be used as a teaching and coaching tool it also allows for all four courts to be live streamed on NJITHighlanders.com during the men's and women's home tennis matches.

Over the past two years, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) has helped facilitate PlaySight's SmartCourt expansion across all divisions of the sport. PlaySight is now powering close to 50 men's and women's programs, including the University of Southern California, Princeton, Harvard, Ohio State, Florida, Indiana University and most recently NJIT.

Through its innovative technology, PlaySight has helped bring data analytics, video content, live streaming and now line call reviews through PlayFair to the ITA and college tennis, helping athletes and coaches to practice smarter and improve faster, and shining a light on programs with cutting-edge recruiting tools and better fan and alumni engagement with live streaming and video highlights.
