Women’s Soccer Falls at Manhattan, 1-0, in 2017 Season Opener

RIVERDALE, NY—After a 90-minute rain delay, Manhattan's Maria Clemente scored the lone goal of the match in the 18th minute as the Jaspers held on to a 1-0 win over visiting NJIT Friday evening in the season opener for both teams.

Clemente's goal, her first of the season, came on a put back off the initial deflection.  Junior midfielder Nicole Copping connected on a header off the corner kick by Erica Modena.  NJIT's David made the save but with a scramble inside the box, the ball was deflected and put away by Clemente.

Sophomore Jasper goalkeeper Olivia Printy recorded her first shutout of the season with the win against the Highlanders, making three saves for the clean sheet.

The overall shots and corner kicks favored Manhattan, 19-14 and 7-5.  In the first half, NJIT held a slight advantage in shots, 10-8 and 3-2 in corner kicks.

NJIT graduate student goalkeeper Karen David collected seven saves in the contest in the first 59 minutes, giving way to senior Amelia Sapirman, who finished the match, making one save.

David made a leaping save in the 53rd minute on a free kick by Modena, punching out the shot over the cross bar.

Sophomore midfielder Fiorella Doglio combined for back-to-back shots for the Highlanders, coming in the fourth minute, which sailed wide and the sixth minute, in which her shot was blocked.

The Highlanders put pressure on the Manhattan defense with multiple scoring opportunities, first coming in the 36th minute after a shot by freshman Christine Conaghy that was blocked, an attempt by Brooke McGee which went wide in the 37th minute and back-to-back headers by Briana Hackos and Carly Berdan went wide and high in the 38th minute.

To start off the second half, Arianna Gerber connected on a header for the Highlanders in the 50th minute, but Printy was in position to make the save.

Late in the second half, the Highlanders gained offensive momentum, after Berdan's attempt in the 76th minute, which went wide, a shot high by Doglio in the 85th minute and an attempt wide by Noelle Batista in the 86th minute.

Berdan led the Highlanders with four shots (two on goal) while Doglio added three shots in the loss.

NJIT will resume play on August 23 when the Highlanders visit Lafayette.  Kickoff is slated for 7pm in Easton, PA.
