Women's Soccer Falls 2-1 to Lafayette in Overtime

EASTON, PA – NJIT women's soccer fell 2-1 in overtime to Lafayette on Wednesday night.

In the Highlanders (0-2) second game of 2017, they received a goal from freshman defender Yasmeen Malik, her first collegiate goal.

The Leopards (1-1) had two different goal scorers in Alex Stanford and Rebecca Schreiner, both earning their first goals of the season.

Both teams came out aggressive, getting chances early on.

NJIT goal keeper Amelia Sapirman notched one of her eight saves, after a Lafayette shot by Sophie Saldivar. Saldivar converted her shot from a corner kick that Sapirman stopped on the goal line.

For the Highlander attack Christine Conaghy beat her defender 1 on 1 and blasted a shot to the low far corner but Leopard Maggie Pohl keeper made a great diving save.

Pohl collected four saves in the win.

Malik scored her first collegiate goal with 2:39 remaining in the first half off a corner kick from Noelle Batista. After the ball bounced around the box, Malik was able to stick the ball in the back side of the net to give the Highlanders the lead heading into halftime.

Starting off the second half, Malik did her job on the defensive end too, stopping Leopards left and right from getting shots off on net.

Lafayette tied the score in the 61st minute with Schreiner's one touch finish in the box, assisted by Saldivar and Katie Brannigan.

Junior Arianna Gerber attempted a bicycle kick that just missed the net off a free kick from Melanie Zrno in the 72nd minute.

Aside from her assist, Gerber was also the only Highlander to tally multiple shots.

Moments later Briana Hackos fired a lazer shot to the top corner that was saved by Kelly O' Brien, her only save of the game after relieving Pohl in the second half. O'Brien earned the win.

Regulation finished with a 1-1 tie, and both teams headed into golden goal overtime.

In the fourth minute of overtime junior Sanford took a hard shot from 18 yards out that Sapirman was unable to hold onto and found the back of the net, giving the Leopards the overtime win.

Next NJIT women's soccer will travel to Lowell, MA on Sunday for a 2pm game against the UMass Lowell River Hawks.
