FORT MYERS, FL—Third-seeded NJIT (8-13) season came to an end Saturday, as second-seeded North Florida (14-8) swept the Highlanders, 4-0, at the FGCU Tennis Complex in the ASUN Women's Tennis Championship Semifinals.
The score is the result of the tournament format, which calls for incomplete individual matches to be halted as soon as one team achieves the points necessary to clinch a victory.
"A tough ending to a great season," third-year head coach
Ira Miller added. "Credit to North Florida for playing well. Congratulations to the NJIT team, senior captain Nathalie( Habegger) and for everyone's hard work and dedication this season."
The Highlanders conclude the 2017 season with a record of 8-13, including three ASUN Conference victories over Lipscomb, Kennesaw State and Stetson. NJIT also notched it's first-ever ASUN Women's Tennis Championship victory, defeating sixth-seeded Kennesaw State, 4-3, in the quarterfinals.
NJIT duo
Nathalie Habegger and
Alba Rosas Garcia earned a doubles victory, defeating North Florida's Lucia Montano and Rafaela Gomez 6-1, at second doubles. North Florida, however, would go on to take the doubles point.
In the singles competition,
Rafaella Sampaio fell in straight sets to North Florida's Rafaela Gomez at second singles, 6-3, 6-2.
Alba Rosa Garcia also fell in straight sets, to Luise Intert, 6-1, 6-2.
Senior team captain
Nathalie Habegger earned a spot on the 2017 ASUN Women's Tennis All-Tournament team for her performances in both matches vs. Kennesaw State and North Florida. She went 1-1 at tht fifth spot and 2-0 at second doubles with teammate Rosas Garcia.
