Stetson Completes Series Sweep With 4-2 Win Over Visiting NJIT

DELAND, FL—Stetson completed a three-game ASUN Conference series sweep with a 4-2 victory over visiting NJIT Sunday at Melching Field.

The win left the Hatters, 3-0 in the ASUN, 13-17 overall and the only ASUN team to sweep the opening season series.  The Highlanders fell to 0-3 in the league, 3-21 overall.

Stetson jumped out to a 4-0 lead through the first five innings and would go on to win, 4-2.  The only runs for the visiting Highlanders, were a pair of runs in the top of the sixth.

The Hatters used four pitchers Sunday as starter Logan Gilbert improved to a perfect 5-0 on the season, pitching 6.0 innings, allowing six hits, two runs and striking out six Highlanders.  Relief pitcher Joey Gonzalez pitched a scoreless ninth, posting his fifth save of the season.

1B Mike Spooner went 2-for-4 with two RBI and one run scored while CF Jacob Koos finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

NJIT's Tyler Stafflinger (1-3) was credited with the loss, pitching the first 3.0 innings, allowing four hits and three runs (two earned).  Highlander relief pitchers Bryan Haberstroh and John Saviano held the Hatters scoreless in the final four innings, allowing just two hits.

2B Johnny Malatesta combined for three hits (all singles), going 3-for-4 while LF Evan Pietronico finished 2-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored.

The Hatters took advantage of an NJIT error in the first inning, allowing Spooner, who had singled, to score all the way from first.

Singles by Hatters 2B Ben Rowdon and Koos set the stage for Spooner to deliver in the third inning, with his single plating both runners for a 3-0 Stetson lead.

Stetson pushed the lead to 4-0 in the fifth, after back-to-back walks for Koos and RF Andrew MacNeil to start the frame.  DH Jack Gonzalez was able to deliver a sacrifice fly to score Koos after he and MacNeil pulled a double steal.

The Highlanders got to Stetson starter Gilbert in the sixth inning by taking advantage of two Hatters errors. CF Jesse Uttendorfer reached to start the frame on an error, stole second and moved up to third on a single by Malatesta before scoring when Gilbert's pickoff attempt on Malatesta was wild. A single by freshmen RF Matthew Cocciadiferro drove in the second run of the inning.

NJIT will return to action for a mid-week game when the Highlanders visit Rider on Wednesday at 3:30pm.
