NEWARK, NJ—The NJIT women's tennis team (5-9, 2-1 ASUN) fell to visiting FGCU (11-4, 3-0 ASUN) 5-2 in ASUN Conference play, Saturday morning at the Naimoli Family Athletic and Recreational Facility to conclude the home portion of the 2017 schedule.
The Highlanders started the day off strong, as duo
Rafaella Sampaio and
Mayar Eltony earned a doubles victory, defeating FGCU's Julia Ascúa and Julianna Curtis, 6-1, at first doubles.
Senior
Nathalie Habegger and
Alba Rosas Garcia secured the doubles point for the Highlanders, topping Maja Ornberg and Breana Stampfli, 6-3, at second doubles.
In the singles competition, Habegger continued her strong play on day, earning a straight-set victory against FGCU's Julianna Curtis, 6-1, 6-2, at the four spot.
Highlander junior
Natacha Minc took the first set in her match against Laura Falceto, but was unable to secure the victory, as Falceto battled back, defeating Minc by a score of 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.
"The team played brilliantly in the doubles," head coach
Ira Miller commented. "On senior day, Nathalie (Habegger) had one of her best days ever, winning her doubles and singles in grand fashion. The team played well overall but FGCU proved to be too experienced. Nevertheless today shows we can play with anyone in the conference"
NJIT will look to rebound on Sunday, April 2, as the Highlanders visit Stony Brook in a non-conference matchup. The match will begin at 1 pm.
