FDU Tops Visiting NJIT


TEANECK, NJ—Fairleigh Dickinson scored a run in every inning but two, rolling to a 14-7 victory over visiting NJIT in seven-innings Wednesday afternoon at the Naimoli Family Baseball Complex.

The Knights, who trailed, 1-0, heading into the bottom of the second, scored three runs of their own in the second and never trailed the rest of the way, raising their overall mark to 2-9 with the win. NJIT is 2-8 overall.

After a solo shot by NJIT's Johnny Malatesta in the top of the second, his first of the season, Fairleigh Dickinson scored three runs of their own in the second on a two-run homer by 2B Jorge Iza and solo shot by RF Jason Fatzinger, taking a 3-1 lead.

The Knights blew the game open in the sixth inning, after a grand slam by 1B Ryan Brennan for a 13-6 advantage.

NJIT scored four runs in the top of the sixth inning, as Malatesta led off the inning with a walk followed by a two-run shot to left center by 3B Bryan Haberstroh

After a single by 2B Tom Brady, which got through the right side, Brady advanced to second on the second walk of the inning for NJIT, setting up SS Justin Etts.  Etts doubled to right center, scoring Brady and Jesse Uttendorfer, capping the four run sixth-inning for the Highlanders.

The Highlanders added one run in the bottom of the seventh on a single through the right side by 1B Alex Burman, scoring Malatesta, who singled up the middle.

Fairleigh Dickinson lefty Evan Layne (1-1) recorded his first win of the season, tossing fiving innings, allowing five hits, two runs while striking out six Highlanders.

NJIT's starter John Saviano (0-3) was credited with the loss, pitching three innings, letting up five runs (all earned) and four hits.  NJIT's fourth pitcher, Andres Fernandez, pitched the seventh inning, giving up one hit and one run.

The Knights combined for 12 hits led by Brennan, who drove in four runs, finished 2-for-3 with, including four runs.  Pinch hitter Owen Vonesslinger went 1-for-3 with three runs batted in and one run scored.  Vonesslinger connected on a bases-clearning double down the right field line, which gave the Knights a 7-2 lead in the bottom of the fourth.

NJIT recorded 10 hits in the loss, paced by Malatesta, who finished 3-for-3, including three runs scored and one RBI, a solo shot in the top of the second.

Seven different Highlanders combined for one hit – Jesse Uttendorfer (1-for-3), Justin Etts (1-for-4), LF Evan Pietronico (1-for-4), Haberstroh (1-for-4), Brady (1-for-4), Burman (1-for-3) and C Edgar Badaraco (1-for-3).

NJIT will look to return back to the win column, when the Highlanders visit George Washington for a three-game series.  First pitch on Friday is set for 2pm, 1pm on Saturday and 12pm on Sunday.
