George Washington Takes Game 1 from NJIT, 8-2


ARLINGTON, VA—George Washington scored at least one run in every inning but two, en route to an 8-2 victory over visiting NJIT in non-conference baseball action at Tucker Field Friday afternoon.

The Colonials improve to 4-10 on the season while the Highlanders fall to 2-9.

DH Mark Osis was the game-leader in hits, going 3-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored.  RF Andrew Selby and C Brandon Chapman drove in a pair of runs apiece while eight different Colonials recorded a hit in the victory.

RHP Brad Renner was solid as the Colonials starter, scattering five hits over 6.1 innings, while holding the Highlanders to a pair of runs.  He struck out three and walked two Highlanders.  The win raised Renner's win-loss record to 1-2.

NJIT's six hits were all singles but one, a double down the right field line by LF Evan Pietronico in the seventh inning.  3B Bryan Haberstroh and 1B Michael Anastasia posted a pair of hits, with Haberstroh going 2-for-4 and Anastasia finishing 2-for-3.

The starting and losing pitcher for NJIT was junior RHP Sean Lubreski (1-1). Lubreski pitched 4.0 innings, letting up seven hits and four runs (all earned).  NJIT's second pitcher RHP Tommy Derer, pitched 2.0 innings, letting up one hit and one run while RHP Andres Fernandez closed out the game, pitching the final two innings.

George Washington struck first in the bottom of the third with two outs, on a single through the right side by 2B Robbie Metz, scoring CF Joey Bartosic, who reached first on a single to right field and putting himself in scoring position, stealing second.

The Colonials added two runs on three hits in the bottom of the fourth and added a single run in the fifth, sixth, and seventh inning pulling ahead, 6-2.

NJIT scored a pair of runs in the top of the seventh, with a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch with 2B Tom Brady at the plate for the Highlanders first run.  C Edgar Badarco reached first on four straight balls, scoring SS Justin Etts, who also reached first with a walk.

George Washington scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth, cruising to an 8-2 victory.

The two teams will be back in action on Saturday at 1pm.
