NEWARK, NJ—The NJIT women's tennis team (5-7, 2-0 ASUN) earned its second ASUN Conference victory, defeating visiting Kennesaw State (5-8, 1-1 ASUN) 5-2, Saturday at The Naimoli Family Athletic and Recreational Facility.
"We continued our strong doubles play and once again carried our momentum into singles," head coach
Ira Miller commented. "Everyone fought hard and the results proved our efforts paid off; Everyone on the team contributed to the five points we garnered to win the match."
The Highlanders turned in strong performances in the doubles portion, as NJIT duo
Rafaella Sampaio and
Mayar Eltony defeated Kennesaw State's Cristina Perez-Martin and Laura Hopton, 6-3 in the first spot.
NJIT went on to take the doubles point, as
Amanda Helminsky and
Natacha Minc earned a victory over Alexandra Mercado and Elle Baker, 7-5, at third doubles.
In singles competition, junior
Natacha Minc earned a straight-set victory over Laura Hopton, winning by identical scores, 6-1, 6-1, at third singles.
Nathalie Habegger continued her strong play by defeating Kennesaw State's Kennedy Craig in straight-sets, 6-4, 6-1, in the four spot.
NJIT's
Alba Rosas Garcia also earned a straight-set victory, defeating Jessica Cantrell, 6-2, 6-2 at fifth singles.
Freshman
Mayar Eltony also carried her momentum into the singles portion of the day, earning a victory over Cristina Perez-Martin in three sets, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2.
NJIT will look to continue its two-match win streak Tuesday, March 28, as the Highlanders travel to West Point, NY to take on Army, beginning at 3:30 pm.
