George Washington Sweeps Weekend Series; Tops NJIT, 6-2


ARLINGTON, VA—George Washington swept the three-game series from visiting, NJIT with a 6-2 victory on Sunday at Tucker Field.

George Washington improves to 6-10 overall while the Highlanders drop to 2-11.  The Colonials defeating the Highlanders 8-2 on Friday, 4-1 on Saturday and 6-2 in game three.

NJIT opened the scoring in the top of the fourth, taking an early 2-0 lead.  George Washington answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth, knotting the game at 2-2. 

The Colonials went ahead, 4-2, in the bottom of the sixth on a two-run homer by Bobby Campbell and increased its lead to 6-2 with another two runs in the bottom of the eighth on a double by Cody Bryant.

George Washington's second pitcher of the day, RHP Jaret Edwards (1-2), picked up his first win of the season, pitching 4.2 scoreless innings, allowing four Highlander hits.  RHP Elliott Raimo pitched the first 3.1 inning in the no-decision, letting up three hits, two runs (both earned) while striking out four Highlanders.

NJIT used four pitchers, as starting pitcher Brian Sondergard pitched 4.1 innings in the no-decision.  Sondergard allowed two runs with no hits while striking out two Colonials.  LHP Justin Chin (0-1) was credited with the loss, pitching 0.2 innings, letting up two hits and two runs.  NJIT's John Saviano pitched the final 2.2 innings.

George Washington's 1B Bobby Campbell led the Colonials with a 2-for-3 day with two runs and two RBI, including a two-run shot in the bottom of the sixth, giving George Washington a 4-2 lead.  DH Cody Bryant went 1-for-2 with two RBI while PH Colin Gibbons-Fly drove in one RBI, finishing 1-for-1.

For NJIT, CF Jesse Uttendofer and DH Evan Pietronico recorded two hits apiece.  Uttendorfer singled up the middle in the third and to right center in the seventh while Pietronico had NJIT's only extra-base hit, a double to right field to lead off the fourth inning.

The Highlanders got on the board first in the top of the fourth on a bases loaded walk by freshman 1B Alex Burman, scoring Pietronico, who led off the inning with a double.  C Brady Hall drove in the Highlanders second run on a sacrifice fly to left field, driving in Michael Anastasia.

George Washington evened the score at 2-2 in the bottom of the fifth with a single through the left side by Gibbons-Fly scoring Bryant and an RBI sacrifice fly by CF Joey Bartosic.

The Colonials went ahead, 4-2, in the bottom of the sixth on a two-run homer to left center by Campbell, his second of the season.

The home team added two more runs in the bottom of the eighth on a double to left center by Cody Bryant, scoring Mark Osis and Campbell, who both singled in the inning.

NJIT will return to action on March 14 when the Highlanders visit Fordham (3-9).  First pitch is set for 3pm at Houlihan Park.
